final

1.       Topic that comes to mind.
a.       The research question that comes to mind is about disabled children. There is no mention of assisted technology in the classrooms of those that are disabled for whatever reason.
b.      Disabilities and classroom technology

2.       I used the key words technology and schools and disabilities. I found the articles were more in line with assisted technologies. I was looking for information applying to General Education Classes that have children with all levels of abilities. I found the Pew work did not seem to address that area and I felt curious. I ended up using Disabilities and classroom technology. It was here I found the article in Educational Leadership which appears to be an academic journal. This article didn't address what I was looking for but I did address the Pew articles summation that there is a gap in technological learning by school and income. This article What’s missing from Teacher prep, states ““We needed to learn how to integrate technology.” New teachers and their mentors were interviewed to gather data about teaching methods for new teachers and the stumbling blocks the need to overcome. I feel this is a growing problem and our schools are not able to keep pace with the amount of children that would benefit from the technology they could be accessing.

Chesley, Gary M.Jordan, Janice. "What's Missing From Teacher Prep." Educational Leadership 69.8 (2012): 41. MAS Ultra - School Edition. Web. 21 Mar. 2013.

3.       A: Authority  Educational Leadership is a periodical for teachers written by experts
S: Sources   Google and K-12
P: Purpose  To offer advice and solutions, articles and service advertisements for educators
E: Evenness   yes it does
C: Coverage Yes it gets to the root of the problem.
T: Timeliness May 2012
4.       I think the Pew article did a good job of identifying there is a gap in the industry of educating yet it really did not offer up much of a solution. Although my original research keywords yielded an article that went in a different direction, I found that it held some answers that were only brought up by The Pew group. There is a classroom gap and some of the nation’s children are being subject to that old class thing. I feel that today the better schools still have more money to higher better teachers and they are still falling short of the technology opportunity in the classroom.
Once we start to address the gap in instructing our educators in the best methods of technological instruction we first need to establish what that is. We are developing so fast the advances are so immediate we are just now recognizing we need to have benchmarks for all the children not just the smarter ones. Applying the technology of cell phones and tablets will give all of the children the advantage but I feel the less wealthy ones would feel that benefit the most. These are the children least likely to have access to the technology on an every day basis.
Not only is it a struggle for some schools to get the items they might need to be effective the teachers are just now being taught effective technological learning by their own experiences. I think the educational system will have a lot to contribute when our classrooms can keep up with my tech savvy Three year old granddaughter.

I love creating these types of pages. My favorite part is the CSS. With just one page in a notepad you can format the whole web page. I like applying the styles better that way than in line . It seems so messy and not as easily seen as on the one sheet. If you use the blank with the formatting for the checking service and all of the code ready you just have to copy that initial code into notepad and start having fun! I like that there are checking serviced for the style sheet as well as the web pages themselves. It is too hard to look at objectively when you wrote the code. Too easy to trick yourself into thinking you did the code the right way. And you can insert the checking code to the bottom of your document that states it was checked. I always felt proud when I could add that symbol.

Search It

This was an interesting assignment. I haven't seen pages like that in a a long time. The html looks so familiar to the 1980 - 1990 eye. I remember when all web pages didn't have that slick glossy look that today's engines do. I hadn't thought of it in a while but the Google engine is a bout all I use.
So here goes...

duckduckgo.com

The search engine did a good job of giving me what I wanted. I found the features to be simple and easy to use. It had an updated look compared to some of the others.

Mama was the next one I tried. This didn't work quite the way I supposed it would. I think the site made me want Google more than anything else.

The digital librarian made me wonder. The search bar was from amazon and I did try my search anyway but wasn't surprised when it came back with items from amazon. I did click into some of the subjects and if you find something that interests you you click on that deeper into the web page. Not as effective as I had imagined

I tried to focus my research even more by adding in the suggested use of future. I chose internet and growth and future. There were many article about the subject and I found several that worked well for the approach I wanted to take.

In 1997 this  magazine article shows us the industries belief about the future of the internet

Internet AND Growth

Summary

This search was tedious and makes me glad I didn't take a pathway requiring heavy research and papers. The search functions do not all work the same. The deep web had better resources and you could refine the search without all the junk but you had to work for the others as well. I hope to get my books soon. I can't help that I even ordered one off topic that I had wanted to read the moment I saw it. Thanks for the fun!

Google books

I had to finally change the search term I was very frustrated by now using internet and growth. This was a very junkie collection of books. I used growth of the internet instead and ended up ordering the book from our library because I am interested in reading it. It is an older book (2001) but valid in my area. I find reading origianl protocol descriptions helped immensely and I think this might as well.

The Internet's Coming of Age. Washington, D.C: National Academy Press, 2001. Print.

This book is written by several of the industries including the national reseach council

IT Pro

I loved the IT Pro section. As a computer student I have used this section before. I never really searched like this in there and when I tried just the words internet and growth I used before i got an error Using the term internet I was amazed at how many window 7 books there are are.I changed the search parameters several times and found that to be a little difficult to pin point what I was looking for . I liked this search function least so far.

the book from summit

I used the same search terms of   internet and growth for this search

the subject headings are slightly different

This is also an ebook and i can't find call numbers

This search was so frustrating. It offered more selections on books that pertained to the growth of business than anything else. Business was not what I wanted.

The book from Clark

The book I chose from the Clark Library was found by using the terms internet and growth.

Practice Questions

Practice Questions(Provide answers/sources for each of these):
1) Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet?

For this question I would use scholarly journals and statistical data. I might focus on the medical journals.Look for studies.

2) Target often forces musicians to alter lyrics in order to have
their CDs sold in Target stores. Is this censorship?

I would look in local resources like newspapers and magazines and national sources like the web. It is here that you will find if the rumor is true. Looking for specific artists or censorship of lyrics might help narrow it down.

3) How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over
someone with a high school diploma?

Current data from a government agency like the occupational directory. This is where you can find the official country wage statistics.

4) Should educators use commercial services to combat
plagiarism?

You might find statistical data from peers to suss out that information.Look for information regarding the improvement of student awareness and sucess rates for instructors using this tool.

5) Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting global
warming?
Research on a focused topic like scholarly journals would be good as well as current governmental data.

These are The questions I used for last weeks responses. I don't think I understood we would be using these to research something formally. It sounds like a project thing.

The Effects of Internet on social evolution.

I would look at scholarly journal for information here. The impact is so broad this question would need to be narrowed a bit. Perhaps look at a specific social piece of information such as age group or perhaps a particular social aspect.

The Internet in our daily lives.

Once again I think I would have been more specific like which part of our daily lives. or define the parts of our lives most deep;y effected.
I would look at trends on the internet to look at the things we are doing and then at specific research done by accredited sources.

What is after the Internet .

Once again finding a specific here might have been better. Looking deeper into the cutting edge technologies that might lead to indications of where the internet is going and what we might expect.
Searching the web, government sources, and technological sources would be good here.

The Open Web

In searching through the open web on Wikipedia, I found the search words I used for the deep web search garnered different results. I was somewhat surprised. I think on the deep web I expected a more technical response like the one on Wikipedia. I do like reading about the protocols of the internet. I liked being able to understand the jargon but felt the deep web had a more interesting aspect.

Research Article

I decided to do some research on the Internet since I am enrolled in Computing classes at Clark College. Previously, I came across the Internet protocol written for the original networking now in place. I had enjoyed that protocol immensely. I decided to refine my search toward the use of email. I feel that email was instrumental in bringing the world together.
The keywords I began with are Internet, protocols, and email  using the search engine in the Gale Reference Library at Clark.
I settled on  an article from the Encyclopedia of Social Networks. I had suspected that the early protocols and uses for email on the Internet would shed light on the direction the network took. It came to light that there were mailing lists that came about due to a man named Steve Walker.
Mr. Walker was a manager for ARPANET, our infant Internet that was used for military and scholarly purposes. "In his June 7, 1975, e-mail, Walker advocated a social use of mailing lists for informal dialogue. In parallel with official experimentation and debate, a number of leisure-related mailing lists, such as SF-Lovers, Human-Nets, and Wine-Tasters, were created for the discussion of topics popular with the scientific and military population of ARPANET".
He felt the people using these mailing lists might benefit by using the Internet to further their interests. This was the first form of Internet social networking. Social networking is not a new concept. Since the beginning of time humans have been socializing. Our current craze of sending out updates on the minutia of mundane living is extreme. I think the founders of the Internet had an idea of what they were doing but no idea how deeply electronic social interactions would effect every aspect of our lives.

Which Article to Use

In following the directions for this assignment I found there is a pesky habit that still lives in me.
As a young student I would use the encyclopedias in our house for research. I did say our house mind you. The man who sold those books to Dad was certain they would make us all intelligent masterful children to be proud of. Mom did not agree. Dad spent all of that money and paid extra for the yearly update volume to counter Mom's argument they would be out of date too soon.
When I finally could read, I used to love reading those books. They had everything in them. My problem was that I could not stop at my subject. I would look up an entry and read it. But I never could stop. I would see the title of the next entry and read that. Then the next. I had such a hard time getting the paper done. Now in my defense I do know a lot of information about a variety of issues.
However, I didn't know I still did that. There I was doing this assignment and I found myself not just looking at one article but many. And I had a hard time stopping, then discovered I didn't want to write about anything I had read.
I found the deep and open web to be important to research. I think if the subject gets more technical of intricate searching the deep web would be better. Also if you were going to write something weighty. We tend to use the open internet everyday for things like phone numbers and maps.

Unit 2:Plagiarism

Safe Practices: An Exercise
Summary: There are few intellectual offenses more serious than plagiarism in academic and professional contexts. This resource offers advice on how to avoid plagiarism in your work.

Read over each of the following passages, and respond on your own or as a class as to whether or not it uses citations accurately. If it doesn't, what would you do to improve the passage so it's properly cited?

1.       Last summer, my family and I traveled to Chicago, which was quite different from the rural area I grew up in. We saw the dinosaur Sue at the Field Museum, and ate pizza at Gino's East.
This does not need a citation. In this instance people are just talking about where they had been in a city.
2.       Americans want to create a more perfect union; they also want to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for everybody.
This should be cited as it is part of a national document.
3. I find it ridiculous that 57% of high school students think their teachers assign too much homework.
Numbers 4, 5, and 6 all refer to the following passage from Martin Luther King's "Letter from the Birmingham Jail":

You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city's white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative.
This should be cited due to the direct quoting involved.

3.       Martin Luther King was certain that nobody would want to be contented with a surfacy type of social analysis that concerns itself only with effects and doesn't deal with root causes.
This should be cited even though it presents as an opinion in a paraphrased form taken from a work.

4.       Martin Luther King wrote that the city of Birmingham's "white power structure" left African-Americans there "no alternative" but to demonstrate ("Letter from the Birmingham Jail" para. 5).
This is cited using quotes for the direct words and location of the piece in paragraph 5.
5.       In "Letter from the Birmingham Jail," King writes to fellow clergy saying that although they "deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham, your statement fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations."
Definitely cite this is a direct quote listing the title and author.
6.       My friend Kara told me that she loves living so close to the ocean.
Do not quote this is casual conversation.

7.       Americans are guaranteed the right to freely gather for peaceful meetings.
This is a statement of common knowledge. No citation paraphrasing a national document.

This is a tricky assignment for me. With so many ways to cite works for different applications it does get a bit mixed up. I don’t think I ever get it right without looking in the Hacker to find the right way to write a paper. I count myself lucky I haven’t taken but one class that wasn't MLA in formatting the required paper. The best strategy for me would be to sit down in the end of a paper with someone else to review my citation and see if it is correct. I struggled with this in my English. There is no excuse and never have I tried to slide anything by any teacher, I just really have to take the time because I always felt like a puppy peeing in the house and never getting it right.
Using a citation engine or having a knowledgeable person review my citation is the only recourse for me.

First Week

It is the first week of school and I am finally finished taking all of the tests required of me. I really just got done with my Cisco exam and scored a high B. I was not looking forward to this tests due to the last Cisco class I had I studied hard on that information and got two tests with a C and one with a D. Never in my history as a college student Have I done so poorly.
I sometimes think that it is because I was doing pre-med classes that were very easy for me and I felt that studying was fun or interesting or maybe just easy. Other times I just felt that Maybe I am not as smart as I thought.
I really think I am smart enough to so these classes and just need to study. All of these kids are so demanding and I like to do things for them or make sure they get to the places they need to go. And of course the dishes and laundry. Real life is so mundane.

In the end here I sit digesting the day and it is one in the morning. I need to have the girl to church by ten for choir so I must go now. I think I shall read myself to sleep with customer service chapter 2.Interesting stuff and it feels easy so maybe that is why I like it. It might be interesting to find out if it is the ease of a class that I get good grades in or several other factors...I think I see a place for an evaluation of my perspective on courses versus grades achieved. Hummm.

Well!

I am now very excited to have this space as my own. I never wanted a blog or thought about one, but now feel like my new room is ready to sleep in on the night you move into a new place. I had to click around to find a few things but the advantage I have over my contemporaries is that I will click rather than wonder what or where a function is.
I think a whole world might have just opened for me. I always get tired of writing. I hate the way my writing will change styles from day to day or when moods change. I never had the discipline to stick with a note book to the end. And did I mention spell check? Love this stuff.
I am looking forward to maintaining this more than my face book. I feel like I really only read and comment on others new, and I do truly enjoy that. This just might be a tad more for me personally.
