In searching through the open web on Wikipedia, I found the search words I used for the deep web search garnered different results. I was somewhat surprised. I think on the deep web I expected a more technical response like the one on Wikipedia. I do like reading about the protocols of the internet. I liked being able to understand the jargon but felt the deep web had a more interesting aspect.

Hi, Cathy:
ReplyDeleteYou are noticing what librarians refer to as "controlled vocabulary" The databases we use including book catalogs, have specified fields that are indexed and there are agreed upon subject headings that go into those fields and this is why natural language searching isn't always the most effective. We'll continue to explore this idea as we proceed. Wikipedia is closer to natural language searching, it searches the body of the articles and not any specified subject heading field or area.
Cheers,
Andrea
